Here is what students and teachers in Iowa City
had to say about WILL POWER:
Will Power reaches young people with Shakespeare and allows them
to find ways to relate his classic works to their modern lives.
This program inspires young people with the magic of live theatre
performance in school.
This program helps students to recognize their own artistic selves
and ways they can participate in arts through performing, directing,
design and other aspects of technical theatre.
74% of 8th grade participating students said they were more interested
in Shakespeare after Will Power.
65% said Will Power allowed them to do something they had never
done before.
Teacher’s Comments:
This is far and away one of the finest programs for students it
has ever been my pleasure to experience. It is so exciting and fun.
It shows Shakespeare’s words still live! For many students,
it starts them on a true voyage of discovery. Two of my last year’s
8th graders took lead roles in West High’s production of Much
Ado About Nothing. This is a wonderful result of Will Power.
Will Power brings a look outside the classroom walls to students
who might otherwise never experience it.
Without Will Power I would probably not teach any Shakespeare related
topics in class.
Student’s Comments:
I want to know more.
I didn’t understand some of the plots and words and now that
I can I want to learn more.
The little act we saw was good and I would like to see the whole
thing.
Beforehand I thought his work was more dramatic, serious and conservative.
I really didn’t know anything about Shakespeare except that
he wrote with LARGE words. I know a lot more and understand better
now.
I know now that not all his plays were drama and totally serious,
but that they are also funny.
I have never seen Shakespeare acted out and it gave me more of an
understanding.
I didn’t know exactly how he showed things and brought his
thoughts alive.
A lot of emotion was shown in one play. He
expresses himself well.
I liked that there were actual people that performed a Shakespeare
play. I really enjoyed myself. Make it longer.
I never paid attention to his works before, but after seeing a play
of his performed I am more interested.
I have heard so much about him, but never learned anything. Now
I want to learn.
